Romania recently purchased 32 F-16s from Norway at a very good price. The cost was €388 million and the fighters will ensure the transition to the F-35.
The 32 aircraft will form two new squadrons.
In Câmpia Turzii, Cluj, where the new 48th Fighter Squadron is based, there are currently 6 F-16 aircraft from Norway, at the 71st Air Base in Câmpia Turzii. They arrived in Romania in December last year and in April this year.
According to DefenseRomania's official sources, a new batch of F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft is due to arrive from Norway in June, so in the next few days. The planes will land directly in Campia Turzii. Throughout the year deliveries of F-16s from Norway will continue, so that the 48th Fighter Squadron will be complete by the end of 2024.
The entire second squadron - the 48th Squadron at Câmpia Turzii - of 16 aircraft will be delivered by the end of this year. Some of the last 16 aircraft forming the third squadron will also be delivered in 2024. In 2025, all 32 aircraft will be delivered.
The 32 Norwegian F-16 AM/BM aircraft are in M6.5.2 configuration and the contract includes spare engines and logistical support.
Romania will have three F-16 Fighter squadrons that will ensure the transition to the F-35 Lightning II 5th generation fighter jets, a contract to be signed in the near future.
The F-35 will be the most expensive acquisition program in our country's history. The cost of this multi-year programme, which will be run strictly from the MoD's budget, is around $6.5 billion. The first phase will see the purchase of 32 F-35 fighter jets.
